History
The Clumber Spaniel originated in France but was taken to the United Kingdom for safe keeping during the Revolution. In Britain they were bred to become the dog that they are today. They are a hunting dog that was used to hunt down small game such as partridge or pheasant. This is a rare breed and it is thought that the St. Bernard and the Basset Hound has lineage with this dog.
Traits
The Clumber Spaniel is a happy and smart breed. They are mellow, kind and affectionate dogs. The Clumber Spaniel has a very sweet disposition and makes a great family dog. They get along well with children, dogs and other animals especially when raised with these from puppy hood. This dog becomes attached to their family and are usually aloof with strangers. The Clumber loves to swim and enjoys being with their people as they make great companions.
Appearance
Weighing in at 55-85 lbs (25-39 kgs) and averaging 16-20 inches high, the Clumber Spaniel is a heavy set dog with large proportions. They have a thick, smooth coat that is usually white with orange or lemon patterns. They have a large head with a broad mouth and their nose is a light brown. The eyes are a deep yellow colour and their ears are big and floppy. The Clumber Spaniels legs are short and their tails are usually docked for show purposes.
Health
The Clumber Spaniel is prone to a few eyes problems, such as Cataracts, Entropian, and dry eyes. Some have been known to be allergic to specific foods therefore creating a skin allergy. Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism and Panosteitis are also genetically predisposed. This breed should also be fed appropriately as they can become obese quickly.
Training
The Clumber Spaniel is a gentle dog and they will need gentle training. Consistency and firmness are key, but not in a harsh manner. They tend to be easier to train as they love entertaining and pleasing their owners. As puppies, they should be socialized with other animals and dogs so they get along well with them as adults. It is not uncommon for them to pee when they get excited as pups.
Care
The Clumber Spaniel is a low maintenance breed. They shed their fur heavily and therefore should be brushed weekly to ensure their coat stay smooth and tangle free. They are notorious for getting ear infections so special attention should be brought to their ears.
Breed
This breed is categorized in the Sporting Group. They will do well in an apartment if they get enough exercise as they don’t need as much room as a house to run around in. Daily walks or even a yard to run around in is perfect. The Clumber Spaniel has an average lifespan of 10-15 years. They have on average 2-8 pups per litter. When obtaining a Clumber Spaniel, keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
