History

The English Bulldog (also called the British Bulldog) was originally bred in England and are the ancestor of the Asiatic Mastiff. They were created to attack bulls. The Bulldog used to be an aggressive fighter but today makes a great pet.

Traits

The Bulldog is an aggressive looking dog but in reality they are very sweet and loving dogs. They get along with children, other family pets and other dogs quite well! They require a lot of attention from their owners and can be dominant so they will need an owner who has experience with Bulldogs or with obedience training to teach this dog that they are not the leader of the household. The Bulldog is a very courageous dog and as friendly as he may be, will defend his owner if needed. They make great guard dogs and are a handful when they are pups but will calm down as they age.

Appearance

Weighing in at 49-55 lbs (22-25 kgs) and averaging 12-16 inches high, the Bulldog is a stocky and stout breed. They are built like a house and have a very large head. They have a short muzzle and breathe or snore loudly! They have an under bite and circular eyes that are almost at either end of the head. Their coat is short and hard and it can be brindle, white, yellow, red, or fawn. Their eyes are large and protruded and they have short muscular legs and a short tail. Their gait is more of a shuffle as their big body and short little legs only allow them this.

Health

The Bulldog having a such a short muzzle, is prone to breathing problems and some have abnormal windpipes which doesn’t help. They usually have eye problems as their eyes protrude and they will sometimes have bad vision. They are prone to allergies, usually skin, and might have joint problems in the knees or hips. They are a climate sensitive dog, so attention should be brought when extremes of weather are occurring.

Training

The Bulldog is a dominant breed and will need an owner who can be firm and clear with them. They love their owners but they can be quite stubborn dogs. This breed is not for the first time owner and the owner should have some sort of experience with the breed or with obedience training.

Care

The Bulldog is a low maintenance dog. They shed only an average amount of fur, and they need to be brushed about once every week or two as the coat is so short and not much grooming is needed , and bathing them is up to how often the owner would like, but keep in mind they are prone to skin problems so bathing to often will dry the skin out. Special attention should be brought to their face, as the wrinkles will become dirty so wiping them out daily will be needed.

Breed

This breed is categorized in the Non Sporting Group. They would do well in an apartment as they do not need as much space as a household. Daily walks or runs to a dog park would be perfect for this dog as they don’t need a backyard to romp around in. They are sensitive to extreme me heat and cold and will need to be inside at all times. The average lifespan for the Bulldog is around 8 years. They have on average 4-5 pups per litter. When obtaining a puppy Bulldog, keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
