History

The Boston Terrier like its name suggests, originated in Boston. They were actually bred as pit fighting dogs! The were created by breeding an English White Terrier (which doesn’t exist anymore) with an English Bulldog. Originally they were bred to be over 30 lbs but as time progressed, they were bred smaller and smaller and named Terrier because they had lost their will to fight and became more of a companion to people.

Traits

The Boston Terrier is a goofy, entertaining little dog that is full of personality. They are great family dogs as they get along with children and other pets. Since they have been bred more for companionship, rather than pit fighting, this little guy is a popular pet as they are friendly towards anyone! They greet strangers warmly and are quite easy to train as they love to put on a show for their owners. They are a sensitive breed, and follow orders from their owners well. They love to be the centre of attention and to be in contact with their family at all times.

Appearance

Weighing in at 10-25 lbs (4.5-11 kgs) and averaging 15-17 inches high, Boston Terriers are solid little powerhouses. They are short and stout, with a very squished in face like that of a pug. They have big round eyes and a small ears that are pricked upwards. They have strong legs and a very short tail. The Boston Terriers coat is very short and smooth. It comes in brown and white, black and white or brindle and white. They have the nickname, the Boston Bull as this little guy can pack a lot of punch!

Health

The Boston Terrier is prone to a few diseases, some of which are breathing problems which come from their short, pushed in face. This difficulty occurs in very hot or cold weather conditions. The are also prone to some heart problems along with eye problems, as they are quite protruded.

Training

The Boston Terrier is a quick little learner. They love to please their owners, making the training process quite easy as long as the owner is clear and consistent. They are a verbally sensitive breed so harsh training is not needed. The Boston is notorious for being difficult to housetrain.

Care

This breed is low maintenance. They have a very short coat that only needs brushing about once every week or two. It is important for the owner to keep their eyes clear of discharge as this can build up quickly.

Breed

This breed is categorized in the Non Sporting Group. They will do well in an apartment if they given regular exercise. They are sensitive to heat and cold so owners should monitor this breed in those conditions. The average lifespan of the Boston Terrier is around 15 years. The have on average 3-4 pups per litter. When obtaining a puppy Boston Terrier, keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
