History
The Border Terrier originated near the border of England and Scotland, in a town called Cheviot Hills. They were bred to kill foxes in their dens which would prevent them from going on farmland and killing livestock. They also hunt badgers and otters.
Traits
The Border Terrier is bright and charming. They are great family dogs as they love affection from children and for the most part get along with other dogs. They however should not be around other small family pets as they have a strong prey drive. If they are socialized with cats at a young age they should do well as adults. The Border Terrier should have an owner who is available throughout the day as they do not do well left alone. As puppies, these little dogs are bundles of energy, but they will calm down and become well natured and behaved adults.
Appearance
Weighing in at 11-16 lbs (5-7 kgs) and averaging between 11-16 inches high, the Border Terrier is a scruffy little dog. They have two coats, a wiry overcoat and a softer undercoat. The coat colours come in tan, grizzle and tan, tan and blue, and tan and red. According to breed standards, no white is allowed except a few markings of it on the chest. They have dark, curious eyes and small floppy ears.
Health
The Border Terrier is a tough little dog. They show little to no signs of pain. They are a healthy breed but Spikes disease (canine epileptoid cramping syndrome) is a newer ailment that is being found in genetically prone Border Terriers. It is a disease that gets confused with epilepsy.
Training
The Border Terrier is a moderately easy dog to train. They need firm and consistent training. As puppies, they need to be socialized in many situations, especially with people and in busy environments like walking through the city.
Care
The Border Terrier is a low maintenance dog. They need to be brushed about 2-3 times a week. This breed is a low shedder and is good for people that have allergies. It is up to the owner how often the dog is bathed but is only necessary if the dog is dirty.
Breed
This breed is categorized in the Terrier Group. They would do well in an apartment if they are given enough exercise. A backyard would be perfect to allow them to run around, but attention should be brought to any potential holes in the fence because this dog is a digger and will find the holes and escape! The average lifespan of the Border Terrier is around 15 years. They have on average 2-8 pups per litter. When obtaining a puppy Border Terrier, , keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
