History
The Black and Tan Coonhound originated in the United States by mixing a foxhound with a bloodhound that were the colours black and tan. The breeds job is to alert its master of prey and to corner it or chase it to a point that its owner can retrieve or kill it. The usual game this type of dog would hunt is raccoon, deer, bears, and even opossum.
Traits
The Black and Tan Coonhound is the epitome of loyalty and companionship. They work along with their master to get a job done. As pets they are loving, affectionate, but can be very weary of strangers. They are not well known for being good with young children, but do very well with older children. As a trademark hound does, this breed will slobber quite a bit! The Black and Tan Coonhound enjoys being with its family pack and does have a reputation to howl if left by themselves to often.
Appearance
Weighing in at 50-75 lbs (45-64 kgs) and averaging 23-27 inches high, the Black and Tan Coonhound is a tall, solid working dog. Their coat is very short and smooth, and comes in, like the name suggests, black and tan. The head of the dog is large and square, and has loose jowls, hence why they slobber so much. The ears are large and floppy and the eyes are light or dark brown. The tail is long and comes to a point.
Health
The Black and Tan Coonhound are a healthy breed and are only prone to hip dysplasia. Breeders often warn owners to not let this dog become obese!
Training
The Black and Tan Coonhounds love to please and work alongside their owners so training needs to be very clear, consistent , and firm. They should also be socialized well as puppies to ensure that they don’t show any aggression towards other dogs. Training should be kept to an on leash basis as these dogs will follow their nose to wherever it leads them.
Care
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a very low maintenance dog. Their coat is short, so it will not require regular brushing, but the ears should be monitored for infection. Having large floppy ears and being in different weather conditions or if the dog swims regularly can lead to ear infections. Regular exams and weekly cleanings of the ears is perfect.
Breed
This breed is categorized in the Hound Group. They do not make very good apartment dogs as they love to run and be outdoors. A big backyard or park is where to get their energy out. The average lifespan of the Black and Tan Coonhound is between 10-12 years. They have on average 7-8 pups per litter. When obtaining a baby Coonhound, keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
