History
The Black Russian Terrier comes from the descendants of at least twenty different breeds of dog! The Airedale, Rottweiler, and Giant Schnauzer are some to name a few. They were bred as guard and watch dogs. This breed was created by the Russian Army to design a dog that had all of its characteristics. It is said that the Black Russian Terrier has the agility and stamina of the German Shepherd.
Traits
The Black Russian Terrier is a noble and courageous breed of dog. They were bred to be the soldier who will work in any type of climate at any time of the day. They must be socialized as puppies to ensure that they show absolutely no aggression towards other dogs. They are extremely protective dogs and are weary of strangers. This breed is affectionate, playful, and loves children. It in general, does very well with other animals, such as cats and other pets, but has a dominancy issue with some other dogs.
Appearance
Weighing in at 80-143 lbs (36-65 kgs) and averaging 25-29 inches high, the Black Russian Terrier is a powerhouse of dog. It is of the more rare breeds of dog and has a solid body. The colour of coat for this breed is completely black and any other colours will cause disqualification if they are to be showed. The face is distinct and the fur resembles a moustache and beard. They have small floppy ears that must not be cropped. The paws of this dog are said to resemble that of a bears. They have a docked tail that is to be higher up on the body.
Health
The main disease the Black Russian Terrier is prone to is Hip Dysplasia. Other then that this breed is healthy. Attention should be drawn to their ears though, as infections may occur if the dog swims a lot or is in a humid environment.
Training
Training a Black Russian Terrier is quite easy. They are easily housetrained and they love to please their owners so obedience is enjoyable to them. Like with all breeds, consistency is the key. Puppies need to have firm discipline to understand that they are not the dominant species, and this may take a while as Black Russian Terriers take a longer time then other breeds to mature.
Care
This breed is of moderate maintenance. Their water proof coat feels wiry to the touch and should be brushed about once or twice a week. The hair around their ears and between the pads of their feet need to be clipped and dogs that have a softer variety of the coat will need to have their coat stripped.
Breed
This breed is categorized in the Working Group. They can live in apartments if they have enough exercise. It isn’t necessary to have a big yard for this breed as they only wish to be near their owners, so lengthy walks or trips to parks would be good. The average lifespan of the Black Russian Terrier is 10-11 years. They have between 6-12 pups per litter. When obtaining a baby Black Russian Terrier, keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
