History
The Belgian Sheepdog, otherwise known as the Groenendael, is one variety of four that make up the Belgian Sheepdogs. The 4 varieties of the breed are the Groenendael, Malinois, Tervuen, and the Laekenois. They are all separate breeds except for the Laekenois which is not as well known. The Greendale (Belgian Shepherd) was, like its name suggests created in Groenendael, Belgium. It was created by breeding 2 black sheepdogs.
Traits
The Belgian Sheepdog is a shy and sweet breed of dog that is very obedient to its master. They have a very high intelligence level and can be protective of their territory, so they need quite a bit of socialization as pups to help them become trustworthy adults. Belgian Shepherds are alert, and confident dogs making them perfect police dogs or watch dogs. They would excel in obedience but need very firm training. This can be reversed if when training you are too harsh. Belgian Shepherds, when socialized with, can be around children and cats, but have a tendency to not do as well with other dogs.
Appearance
Weighing in at 60-75 lbs(27-34 kgs) and averaging 22-26 inches high, the Belgian Sheepdog is a noble and solid dog. They have a long, thick outer coat and a plush undercoat. They have black fur with bits of white on the chest and toes being permitted. The ears are large and pricked upward and their muzzle is long like that of a German Shepherd. The Belgian Sheepdogs eyes are round and brown and their tail is long and comes to a point. The body is meant to be athletic and agile but if overfed and not exercised regularly, can become obese.
Health
The Belgian Sheepdog is a hearty breed of dog. They are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, skin and eye problems, but none of these are major concerns. On the whole they are healthy, unless they become obese.
Training
The Belgian Sheepdog is an active high energy dog and they excel greatly in obedience, and agility. Firm training is needed but in a positive manner as if trained to harshly the Belgian Sheepdog will become non caring and stubborn.
Care
This breed is a very heavy shedder and needs to be brushed daily as it has a very long outer coat and a thick undercoat. Mats are not uncommon as the coat can be easily tangled.
Breed
This breed is categorized in the Herding Group. They would make good apartment dogs if they get exercised regularly. It is preferable that they have an off leash area to run around in, such as a park or a backyard. If not exercised enough, they will find things to keep their minds entertained. The average lifespan for a Belgian Sheepdog is between 13-14 years. They have on average 6-10 pups per litter. When obtaining a baby Belgian Sheepdog, keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
