History

The American Foxhound originated in the United States and were bred to hunt fox, and work alongside their owners. They are a mixture of English and French Foxhounds giving them a different look as well as a higher endurance when hunting. There are a few strains of the American Foxhound and they all look relatively similar to the model we know today.

Traits

The American Foxhound is a friendly, outgoing, and affectionate breed that is known for their curiosity. They have a strong sense of smell, and if they ever find an interesting scent when off leash, they will follow their nose until the mystery scent has been found.

This breed is great with people, they thrive on praise and love, they adore children and get along very well with other dogs because for years they have been bred to hunt in packs. They shouldn't be around smaller family pets such as cats or hamsters because they have a high prey drive and might chase or attack if left alone. The American Foxhound is a hardworking breed that will excel in tracking, hunting and agility because they use these skills every time they are out on a hunt.

Appearance

Weighing in at between 65-75 lbs (29-34 kgs) and averaging 21-29 inches high, the American Foxhound is an elegant, sleek dog that can be bred for functionality or for their show quality appearance. They are slimmer and taller than the English Foxhound, but this only adds to their speed.

These dogs have long, rectangular muzzles, and large floppy ears which are excellent for picking up the quiet sounds of their prey. Their body is lean yet muscular and they have long, straight legs. This breed can come in any colouring but most commonly seen is the white with brown or black patches throughout the body. The American Foxhound has a short, harsh coat that is weather resistant, aiding them when they are hunting in wet weather or marshy areas.

Health

The American Foxhound was carefully bred and don't suffer from many of the genetic diseases most purebred dogs do but are known to contract platelet disease. They are notoriously known for become obese quickly. These dogs will need to have large amounts of exercise daily as their energy level is considerably high, so over feeding this breed even a little bit each day will eventually show greatly in the long run.

Training

This breed is one that can be taught various commands quite easily. They love to please their owners and are highly motivated by this, so simple repetition of each command and firmness when disciplining will result in a very obedient dog. Barking might be an issue as they have a loud "bay" like that of a Beagle, so training might be needed if they do become too barky in the household. American Foxhounds are known also for being a bit harder to housebreak, so a sharp eye and constant outings (every 2-3 hours) will promote good behavior and they should pick it up as long as their owner is consistent and aware.

Care

This breed does not need much grooming to upkeep their harsh coat. They should be brushed about once every 2 weeks and bathed once every 2-3 months or however often the owner feels it necessary.

Breed

This breed is categorized in the Hound Group. They will do well in a household environment but best case scenario would be if they had alot of land to run around on (like acreage on a farm) because they have loads of energy that needs to be released!

The American Foxhound's lifespan averages 10-12 years and they have around 5-7 pups per litter. When obtaining a puppy Foxhound, keep in mind that every puppy is different and to research your breed before bringing the baby home!
