Basics To Keeping Your Dog Healthy

Managing your dogs weight

Like any human, being obese will directly affect their health. It has been proven that a dog overweight or obese, will inevitably cause strain to his joints, will have hearth stress and will lower the resistence he has in fighting any disease.

A dog which is lean, will live longer then a dog which is overweight and that has been proven to be a fact. The best way to manage an overweight dog is to give it a proper diet, which would be to feed him restricted quantities of a calorie-reduced product. These so-called products can be found in most animal stores.

Exercising your dog

Dogs do need exercise to be healthy, this does not mean putting them on a benchpress! You can easily see the difference between a dog that is exercising and one that isn't. Regular exercise such as playing "catch" in a park with a ball or other activities will help your dog maintain his muscles and a good body weight.

There are 2 categories of parasites, external and internal.Common external parasites are fleas, ticks and mites. Internal parasites would be hookworms, tapeworms, roundworms and hearthworms. These above are all a threat to your dog's health. The external ones would cause apparent skin irritation and the internal ones would cause in some case diarrhea or life-threatening hearth didease. But don't be alarmed, parasites are easyly controlled. Talk to your veterinarien to get information about the different parasites in your area and then you can take the preventive actions with him.

Dental Health

Keeping your dog's mouth clean is an important part his well-being. Bacterial infections in his mouth could bring about heart and kidney disease. To prevent such infections one would include brushing and providing treats that promote chewing, which is a great way to control plaque. There are many pet foods that are specifically designed to provide dental health benefits.

Tartar build-up can cause his gums to inflame, so his teeth must be cleaned. This will be done by visiting periodically a dog dentist. The way this is done, is by ultrasonic scaling and polishing. This procedure in most cases would be under general anaesthetic.

It is no science when it comes to keeping your four-legged friend feeling and looking great. Keep these simple points in mind, apply them, and your are doing the basics to keeping your dog healthy.
