Choosing a Dog

Getting Started with your Dog

Getting a new dog is always an exciting part of life. It is easy to be enticed by the lovable sight or adorable gaze of a puppy. It is also easy to forget the important things to consider prior choosing your dog .

The significant investments of time, attention, money, as well as many other various long term responsibilities of choosing your four-legged friend, should be all worthy of deep thought and consideration.

Dog Upbringing

Unfortunately, prospective dog owners tend to underestimate the investment of time, energy and money that raising, training and socializing a dog in today's world requires.

It can be often very time consuming and frustrating, not to mention put strain on family and self and increase the stress in the environment.

Successfuly integrating a dog requires constant supervision and monitoring. If the owner or responsible caretaker of the pet has many other external demands which require additional time on the part of that person, then this holds especialy true and can make the situation even more difficult for both owner and dog. This does not mean, however, that it cannot be done.

Impulsive or irresponsible decisions can lead to frustrations, disappointments, heartbreaks and may even eventually result in surrendering the dog to a shelter or rescue home, and quite sadly, euthanasia.

In the United States alone, the premature deaths millions of the dogs are the result of all too frequent impulsive and poorly thought out decisions on the part of owners.

Decisions should NOT be taken based on how popular or "in" a certain dog breed is. Any dog selected for looks rather than temperament should not outweight your acutal ability to have a dog that is compatible to your lifestyle, and that will allow you to provide proper care.

Remember: you are taking on a commmitment of 12 to 15 years. The lifestyle changes you may experience over those years should be of primary concern to you and is a topic that deserves due focus in the initial phases of your decision.

Dog Breed

The dog breed is the second most important element to take into consideration after evaluationg your capacity to actually own and properly care for your dog.

There exists over 500 dog breeds in the world today, all unique in their variations of shape and size, but also dissassiocate themselves in temperments, personalities and lifestyle habits.

A particular dog will possess unique characteristics, qualities and flaws inherent too their particular breed type. These charateristics are what dog prospectors must absolutely evaluate carefully to avoid clashing personalities between dog and dog owner, that can ultimately, and typically do, lead to premature and unfortunate outcomes.

All too often, pets and pet owners personalities are not compatible, resulting in the abdication, neglect and/or abuse of the animal. This is also the reason for the all-too-many overcrowded dog rescue centers and animal shelters worldwide and existant today.

Ideally, all soon-to-be dog owners should include in their search a careful analysis of the variety of dog breeds and the respective breed information, to ensure they find the ideal dog for them and to also ensure they are able to prove this animal a loving home where it will be cared for - that of which all dogs and pets alike are duely entitled to.

Once these relatively simply, yet crucial steps, have been done and that you are on your way to welcoming a new dog into your life and home, the only problem you will be left with is finding him or her a name!

If you are currently in the market for a dog, or know of a friend or relative in the search for a dog, insure that these important points have been carried out. You can also help save an animal by extending a visit to your local pet adoption service and adopt a dog.
